Monster Journal
In your informal journal, brainstorm a list of “monsters” in today’s society. They may be real or fictional, but they should be things or people (not issues). Spend some time thinking of all the different types that you can–the more the better. Then spend some time considering what makes them “monstrous.” Which are the worst? Which seem tame? Explain your ideas. Then blog one of your monsters names, the explanation for why that monster made the list, and its level of monstrosity. YOU MAY NOT BLOG A MONSTER THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN BLOGGED! This is due Tuesday before class. *I made a clarifying comment below. Please read!*

Vamrpires are todays monsters. Alot of people are fascinated by them or they creep them out. In Twilight, there are vampires that are tame and not really considered monsters becasue they dont drink blood but there are also the bad vampires that do drink blood…most people love Edward Cullen :). Vampires are usually considered monsters because poeple are supposed to be affraid of them, and the fact that they drink blood.

I personally think the dark is on my top 5 of scariest things in the world. It is minor, but I am always afraid to venture through my house in the middle of the night. I also will not go outside in the dark, mostly because I am afraid that somneone will try to kidknap me. :z When I was little I was almost kidnapped and therefore am most scared of that happening to me again (It’s #1 on my list). I also live by the highway (an ideal place for something to go wrong, just ask CSI).
September 3rd, 2009 at 2:57 pm
stalkers…they pretty much explain themselves…creepy. i guess there are quote on quote tame stalkers. an example would be the boy at school who seems to be everywhere that you seem to be, stares at you in class like he’s on drugs, or has his schedule changed to match yours after asking you the day before what your classes were and what hour you have them; so you kinda feel sorry for him because he has no chance. however the worst kind is the creepazoids…these are the ones that are about a million years old (no looks whatsoever) and follow you around at work and get mad when they find out you have a boyfriend and then angrily inquire as to why you are cheating on them and then they find out where he lives…
whahahaha…ok now im gonna sign off before this gets ginormously long…not like it already isn’t…don’t judge me!!!!!!!!!
September 3rd, 2009 at 3:03 pm
OMG!!! I totally had a dream where that happened to me!! I was walkin through the halls and everywhere I turned CYRUS was there!!!! Then all my teeth fell out… I don’t know what that means, so maybe dreams could be scary too? lol Oh, the horrors of high school! Sorry if I’m taking up everybodies ideas. I don’t mean to, they just kinda come to me… Like Cyrus in my dream…
P.S.- Cyrus, don’t take this the wrong way, but I see you more as a brother. Don’t be mad when I get a boyfriend k? You don’t need to know where he lives. (don’t be mad at me!!!! please?
) YAY PLAY!!!! Juror #4!!! woot!

Dear Ms. D,
My bad.
My plan to stay focused throughout these bloggs has definately failed. I apologize for distracting everybody.
September 3rd, 2009 at 3:29 pm
I don’t mind distraction. It’s fun to read.
September 3rd, 2009 at 3:32 pm
CLARIFICATION…Nichole, your monster isn’t really a monster…it’s more like something you’re scared of. When I’m saying monster here, I’m meaning an actual being, something alive (or I guess dead in the case of vampires), but at least something that can PURSUE, move, kill, etc.
Also, let’s try to be as specific as we can be. Dallis put vampires, which is pretty broad. She mentions Edward Cullen (from Twilight) as a counter-example of how vampires aren’t always monsters anymore. My question to her would be ok, so what vampires would be considered monsters?
September 3rd, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Child molesters are awful monster! Taking over a little child who has no way to defend against the adult is terrible. Children look up to some of these people and then when they are sexually abused they don’t want to tell anyone because they don’t want to disappoint someone who may be their role model. Me and my cousin read this article in a magazine about a girl whos stepfather did bad things to her and I could barely read it because it was so disturbing.
on a happier note I love Edward Cullen! haha
September 3rd, 2009 at 4:04 pm
BULLIES!!!! Bullies are one of todays biggest monsters. They even may create other monsters such as people who have been bullied there whole life and start to commit crimes and may even become murderers. : / They are monsters in the fact that they harm people mostly emotionally and mentally but also sometimes harmfully. (like stuffing someone in a trash can lol). But anyways bullies are a bad part of todays society.
September 3rd, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Cancer is a hideous monster that some people can’t detect. Ovarian cancer is very hard to detect. Cancers like pancreatic and liver cancer are mostly terminal and if I had that I would panic. Some are hereditary, like breast cancer, which is scary if that’s in your family history. It is one of the most deadly things I have seen. They suck out the lives out of people and they die in pain. That, is a monster.
Oh, and vampires are scary, especially when Tom Cruise was one in Interview with the Vampire. I feel nauseous typing about it. Tom Cruise is a monster too.
September 3rd, 2009 at 4:22 pm
I agree Rachel. We have this old, fat, and creepy customer at Farm and Fleet who rides on the scooters and tries to kiss girls. We have to hide people in the warehouses to escape Java the Hut. He does that to the people at Walmart too, I was there and he made a girl cry in the parking lot. He’s the fat creepy stalker of Muscatine.
September 3rd, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Well, I am going to say the biggest monster living today is…….. A Daddy-Longlegs. Why? - Because they are the most venomous spider! Yes, it’s true! It is just that their mouths are too small to bite anything! But, be careful..if they ever figure out how to un-pop their jaws or open up bigger or something…we’re all dead.
September 3rd, 2009 at 5:50 pm
Parents who don’t love their children. I think this is one of the worst monsters in society today because when you attack at child at a young age, the wounds from the attack always stay with them. The tamest of these being workaholics (the ones who don’t make time for their kids). Sure, they can make excuses and say that they love their kids, but you can’t love someone you don’t know. The worst are the parents who have kids just to stay on welfare, abusers, the ones that make the child provide for them, and the parents who don’t love their spouse but make the kid suffer with them. Because of these parents, these monsters, children are alone, defeated, and worst of all, without hope. How can we expect a society to flourish when the family unit doesn’t exist?
September 3rd, 2009 at 5:51 pm
& apparently i did not proofread.
September 3rd, 2009 at 6:53 pm
I believe Terrorists are the biggest monsters in society. On September 11th our world changed and so did so many people’s lives. A terrorist is a monster because one person could change the world in a matter of seconds. Someone with that much power really, really scares me!
September 3rd, 2009 at 8:21 pm
hahaha i just read hannah’s comment. that’s classic.
September 3rd, 2009 at 8:33 pm
Wow…okay so I am going to be the loser in the class and say natural disasters. I noticed that alot of the ‘monsters’ people are putting down are…well….people. But I think that natural disasters are very big monsters. I mean think about it….when Hurricane Katrina hit, all of those people were left homeless; they lost everything. And not only are natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, and monsoons scary and devastating, but so are ice storms and even high tides/floods. I guess I just worry about things like that alot. So that’s my answer. Go ahead and hate those of you who were going to use this idea.
September 3rd, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Oh and to comment on other topics.
Britt- I agree. Terrorists are scary…but there are other things that hit closer to home that scare me more than terrorists.
Hannah- lol you crack me up girl!!!!!! But seriously I despise anything with more than four legs so yeah those are definately scary!!!!!
Cristina- you are so right. Just the thought of a parent not caring one ioata about their child……I don’t like it one bit and those people better not run into me…..
Miki- I guess that I don’t think of cancer as a monster anymore. I have three people in my family with cancer and although it’s scary I have come to accept it. In that case (and it’s one of the very few) I try to look on the brighter side of it.
Rachel- stalkers….well Britt knows what I’m talking bout when I say OMG!!!!!!!!! Creepers!!!!!!
I guess what I consider scary is different than most people but everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Btw-Ms. D….I have a monster of my own that a few people know about but I would really like to talk to you about it. Let me know what time works for you.
I’m done blogging for now. Don’t be surprised if I blog more later…..
September 3rd, 2009 at 8:46 pm
Just to clarify—–The last line of my first blog was supposed to say….Go ahead and hate ME those of you who were going to use this idea…..Sorry- my proofreading is not so good.
NOW I’m done lol.
September 3rd, 2009 at 9:53 pm
Wow. All of you are downers…Reading these are just plain depressing. Wait let me clarify. Ms.D is the downer for having us do this assignment. I try not to think about this kind of stuff because I like to live in Kelsey land where everyone is happy and there is sunshine and rainbows and absolutely NOOOOOO daddy long legs! It’s a pretty cool place. You guys should come visit some time. Oh and by the way, Batman hangs out here too with me. The real one, not me trying so desperately hard to be him…
September 3rd, 2009 at 9:57 pm
I guess I should probably do this assignment though…I think the true monsters of society are haters. There’s no need ya guys. Give Peace a Chance. Sorry I’ve been listening to The Beatles and John Lennon all night….but cerially this world could be a way better place if we didn’t have haters. I don’t really know how to specify…
And I fully agree with Miki. Cancer is my number one choice for the worst monster on earth.
September 3rd, 2009 at 9:58 pm
oh my goodness… in class i told brittany what i was going to use and now i have completely forgotten it after reading everyone elses… great…
September 3rd, 2009 at 10:02 pm
and then as soon as i hit send it popped into my head… how convienient… so i believe that something in our society today that is a monster is addictions to anything, from an eating addiction to smoking and to doing drugs and the tons of other things people get addicted to like facebook or things like that. if we didnt have so many addictions in the world today it would run alot smoother and i dont believe people would have as many problems… thats the monster i was thinkin of…
September 3rd, 2009 at 10:02 pm
And the creepy guy with the crazy eye-hands off of Pans Labyrinth too. He was in plenty of my nightmares. Thank you Cristina for opening my vulnerable mind up to such horribleness!!!
September 3rd, 2009 at 10:07 pm
And Zombies…No I take that back. Zombies are pretty cool. Plus, if they ever do attack I have my handy dandy Katana hidden underneath my bed so no worries!
September 4th, 2009 at 10:14 am
Beckers- I’m available always! And I’m intrigued…
September 4th, 2009 at 11:34 am
Stalin was a monster who killed more people than Hitler by several millions. He killed many that didn’t believe in Communism, which is why he caused the Red Scare. There was a time where we sided with Stalin during WWII, but then the trust diminished after the Yalta Conference. Thank goodness he’s dead.
September 4th, 2009 at 11:38 am
I think the executives of tobacco companies are monsters. They make entirely too much money off of little sticks that kill people. Since their product kills, they always are looking for new and younger customers, thus tempting and tainting our youth. And they supply the smoke that makes me have asthma attacks, so I say boo.
September 4th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
i agree with rachael..there’s this guy at Hy-Vee that always just sits in the dining area, sips coffee for hours at a time, and just WATCHES the girls..he always smiles and never looks away..sometimes he buys girls roses and stuff..it’s pretty creepy…
Anyways..I think a few things are creepy besides that
1. Child molesters..There is actually someone in my family that was molested by her mother’s boyfriend when she was like 5 or 6. He also beat everyone in the family, inlcuding his own kids. These people scare me because of their sudden violence..it’s scary how they can snap. But they are definitely monsters for destroying children’s lives..
2. I don’t really know how to label this one, but anyone who lowers someone elses self-esteem. There is a difference from being honest and just being mean. Some people say things without a second thought to how it makes other’s feel. They say it just to be funny, or for any other type of reason, but it’s still wrong. People that are treated like this continually remember it forever and it can affect their lives, which makes anyone who does this monsters to me.
sorry it’s so long..
and miki..maybe the guy in muscatine also comes to Milan..our creepy stalker guy has friends that sit with him sometimes lol.
September 4th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
So apparently I’m a doody-head and didn’t comprehend the assignment giveen to me; soooo, My newsest monster: The boogy man! This is definately a minor monster, who is tame when we are adults though VERY scary as children. I still remember running and jumpimg on to my bed so that he couldn’t grab my feet and drag me under the bed into the unknown world of incomprehencible dangers. Sooo, I hope thius is better Ms D and if not, then I suck. And you will, sadly, have to hear from me yet AGAIN!! So hopefully this is good bye, if not then I’m sorry you had to read a bunch of WRONG posts.
I’m sorry I am a loser guys, I just can’t seem to help myself.
P.S.- just in case I DID get this one wrong AGAIN I am going to also throw Werewolves out there. You know who they are. I need not explain, though they are definately minor…(at least Jake from Twighlight is.
)
September 4th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
These are definitely getting better. (Nichole, you’re amazing. And that entry is so much more what I was going for.) I’m going to say something again though….AVOID BEING VAGUE!!!! Child molesters, haters, people who bring down other’s self-esteem, terrorists…these are all categories. Can we name any examples of the WORST in the category??
Miki, Kelsey- you put down a specific person. YAY!!!
September 4th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
woops! JACOB**
September 4th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
Michael Jackson is the worst child molester…well..maybe not the worst, but one of the most publicized. They are all bad..my example was my cousins boyfriend (now ex boyfriend). I’d rather not use names though, since it’s someone from the general Quad City area..
and as for people who bring other’s self esteem down, they are everywhere. It’s hard to use examples because the first ones that come to mind are people that are from this general area and I don’t want to offend anyone. In all honesty, I think we are all guilty of that one at some point, whether we mean to be or not.
I guess someone like Paris Hilton would be an example because she has this air that she’s better than everyone. But I really can’t think of a good example for a specific name for that category without the possibility of offending some people..which I don’t want to do.
September 4th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
nice sadie…i didn’t even think of that. =]
way to be original. haha not saying no one else was. ya kno. just givin props. & kelsey, you soooo love me for makin u watch that movie!
& yea…idk i wasn’t very specific. but. hmm.
September 4th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
oh oh oh and p.s. ms. d. thank you SO much for lookin over my essay. & you know i love when you write comments all over it. some of the stuff you put on there i didn’t even think about! and somethin weird happened when i printed the essay bc i opened the file when i got home & there was a sentence that was there that wasn’t in the one i gave you…sooo yea. weird.
September 5th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
I think that sharks are the scariest monsters in our world today, especially great white sharks. There is nothing tame about them. They eat people. After watching shark week, I am scared to ever swim in the ocean again.
September 5th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
wow all the good ideas are taken… maybe i should have started my homework earlier haha oh well.. well i am going to be the one who is a little out of the ordinary. I guess it only pertains to people who go to the ocean though.. I think the monsters of today are sting rays and jellyfish! These animals are conitnuously hurting people and they are dangerous! A sting ray can potentially be deadly, depending on where they sting you… I guess you could say sharks are monsters too but there is many more cases of people being hurt by jellyfish and stingwrays than being hurt by sharks..
I think if i would have gotten on here a little earlier i would’ve said that the monsters of today would be things like murderers and child molester and oh yes even stalkers.. they are creepy!
But….I really do have to agree with Miki! I think cancer is a monster… more than just a monster though too. It can be a life sentence…. a reality check….. It scares me i’m not going to lie. I know that its everywhere its in everyone and ive seen what is has done to people. I don’t if i will ever overcome my fear of it…welll anyways………………. on a lighter note just to let everyone know my mom is doing a little better! =)
September 5th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
sorry if theres mistakes i am in a hurry cause im going to red lobster!!!!!!! =) yummmmy! oh yeah and HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GOOOD LABOR DAY WEEKEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 5th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
Jen you are SO funny!!!! But yes sharks scare the living daylights out of me. When I was in Florida I was scared to go in the ocean but my boyfriend kinda made me. However, I agree…after watching shark week I’m probably not going in the ocean anytime soon.
September 5th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
corrupt political officials. Rob Blagoavich is a prime example of a threatening yet stupid monster. He abused the powere that was give to him by the voters. But on the plus side he was stupid enough to get caught. When people like him get into office, they are just asking for our republic system of government to be replaced by a dictator so that it doesn’t happen again. So these people threaten our very way of life, not just our pocketbooks.
September 6th, 2009 at 10:35 am
Oh dang it Sadie!
That was mine… D:
“Few people on this planet knows what it is to be truly despised. Can you blame them? I earn a living fronting an organization that kills 1200 people a day. Twelve hundred people. We’re talking two jumbo jet plane loads of men, women and children. I mean, there’s Attila, Genghis… and me, the face of cigarettes; the Colonel Sanders of nicotine.” - Thank You for Smoking
It’s obvious. Tobacco corporation executives are the worst monsters. They’re the minds that create the ads and speak the words that get so many people addicted each day. It’s all about money with them.
“Most people have this image in their heads of tobacco executives jet-setting around the world on private planes, eating foie gras as they count their money. Not me. I like to ride with the people. Know your clients. My people cram themselves into a tiny seat, pop a Xanex, and dream of the moment when they can stuff their face with fresh tobacco. If I can convince just one of these kids to pick up smoking, I’ve paid for my flight. Round trip!” - Thank You for Smoking
September 6th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
ok sooooo, since my blog earlier was wrong I am going to say that commercials are monsters and need I say more very annoying. The worst ones being the repetitive ones that stay in your head it seems for forever (like the Lebeda matress one). It’s definitely one of the tame monsters but they really make me angry when I am trying to watch one of my favorite t. v. shows. And if I did this wrong I am sorry.
September 6th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
One of the biggest monsters in today’s society are abusive people. These people beat each other thinking its alright. Like men for example: some abusive their wives to the point where they are terrified to even escape. If u want an example women in my family have been badly beaten in their lives. I myself have been a witness to such destruction. I am not scared to talk about it. My mom was beaten by a man and i had to stand and watch. It takes one action to make a women realize what she needs to do to get out of that kind of situation and i was her angel in that case. Anyway abusers cause a lot of damage to the human mind and on the outside. That’s why i believe that Abusers are monsters in today’s society.
September 6th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
I love how everyone had such serious ideas! Well….my idea of a monster in today’s society is either the Lochness (hope i spelled that right) Monster or Bigfoot. Whether they are tame are not nobody is really sure. I think society views them as monsters because there is not alot of information available about these things and people don’t know how to handle their “existance.” Things like the sandman may be viewed as monsters to children and used as a tool for parents. While they may be neither tame nor ravenous…they are still viewed as monstrous. I Hope that sounded like an adult answer….hahaha
September 7th, 2009 at 9:59 am
soo my new monster is goin to be liars. they can be tame or vicious depending on the lie and tons of the monsters you guys have already said fit into mine. i mean come on child molesters with their whole “I have Candy” or “help me find my puppy” bits are definately lies. rod blagoavich too. and the one i am going to specifically point out would be a tame monster, my little sister… She always steals my dang clothes then lies and says i put them in her room which obviously i did not! its now to the point where if i catch her wearing my clothes she loses her cell phone for a week. she hasn’t done it since that rule was put into place… so monsters can be controlled too
September 7th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Yay!!! Hailey Jane (is now 18)!!! You put some specific “fictional” monsters (or maybe they are true…) like the Lochness Monster, Bigfoot, Sandman…I was hoping more of us would put things like this. We are turning into a very literal class! Those of you who do still need to blog or those of you who come on to read what other people said…what other monsters do we have like these? I’m thinking Freddy Krueger, Jason, Mike Myers….any others??
September 7th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
wow so, whilst reading these comments i got slightly depressed…i didnt realize that this was sucha serious topic! o.0
okay, now on to the assignment i clearly should have done thursday night…hmm i think im gonna go with some fictional characters, because most of my real-life ideas have been taken :/
1. Chucky- the creepy doll/boy! i have never seen one of his movies all the way through! they are really creepy. i think that he may have been the reason why i started to destroy my barbies instead of play with them…
2. Extra-terrestrial beings- okay so this one cant be proven to be fictional, but they cant be proven to exist either. all im saying is that im not buying the whole cute E.T. thing.
3. Death Eaters - Showing my nerd here, i know. But honestly who isnt scared of a bunch of people dressed in black cloaks carrying sticks, chanting (or merely thinking) spells that could kill you in an instant!
i hope that these satisfy the fictional character category… o.0
September 7th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
I was going in the same direction as Hailey with the monster ideas. Two characters portrayed as monsters are Frankenstein and Dracula. Frankenstein is not made to be a monster but when he is rejected by others he goes against his creator and looks for revenge. Dracula he is a blood sucking vampire, enough said.
September 7th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
Okay so I was in my “library” today reading my Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader when i came across this page of mythical creatures that you never knew “existed. Scared the crap out of me…
Manananggal” is a mythical “vampire-like” being, often a woman, with no lower limbs and has bat-like wings. Uses its proboscis-like tongue to suck-out unborn children from their mothers’ wombs while the mother is sleeping; Has the ability to transform to various animals in order to avoid capture & lives as a normal human beings during the day; Can only be killed by finding it’s lower half (from the waist down) & smearing it with crushed garlic (bawang).
September 7th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
Scariest Monster ever = Miley Cyrus. Hands down. Don’t deny it people. Everything about her makes me want to go hide under a bed somewhere.
September 7th, 2009 at 8:09 pm
OK… so I think that I will probably be the last one to do our homework…..idk….. everytime. haha
One of the worst monsters to me are sharks! I hate sharks! They make me and about 20 million other people in the midwest only be able to enter the ocean up to our ankles! Sharks prey on absolutely everything! People who are just surfing and swimming and just minding their own buisness just go missing or come back on shore with the name of IHOP. HAHA… Hope no one that has lost a limb is reading this….
September 7th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
okay, back to my daddy longlegs….
while they are tame as of NOW..they can change at any moment and destroy humankind. there. i used the word tame.
and i can’t really give a specific name because..i dont speak daddy longlegs..if someone does. let me know which one you talk to and I’ll use their name for an example. && then I’ll get you the name of a doctor you can talk to..instead of the spider.
September 7th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
I personally think todays monsters is man.No I dont mean man as in just the male population but everyone as a whole. We cause death and distruction whether it be through our actions or words. For instance Hitler ordering the slaughter of many and on the complete opposite side a high school student can tear someone down with his or her teasing and making fun of someone till it eventually causes them to commit suicide like the girl who was bullied by other girls that went to her school on myspace to the point where she couldnt hndle it anymore. So I think the real monsters are us.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:35 am
Due to my obvious Hispanic ancestory, I chose a monster that has plagued my people for 14 years El Chupacabra or the less terrifying english translation of goat sucker. The Chupacabra stands three feet tall and hops like a kangaroo. It has a forked tongue, large fangs and leaves a sulfuric stench when alarmed and it’s eyes glow red which cause the witnesses to vomit. The Chupacabra is a evil demonic monster that has and will continue to destroy my peoples livestock for centuries to come except…it isn’t real
September 8th, 2009 at 9:14 am
I think Michael Myers is a modern monster. He is very big and almost invinceable, he is a killer which makes him scary. Being scary is a trait that monsters all have in common, for example Dracula and Frankenstein are both terrifying. As someone else said about stalkers being monsters he is also a stalker, he stalks his little sister trying to kill her.
September 8th, 2009 at 10:46 am
ok…I’m going to be a true country/rodeo girl and say a bull. They’re just animals…but if any of you have ever watched a rodeo you would know what I mean! There have even been deaths caused by them. All I know is I am not going in the same arena with them!!
September 8th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
Okay, it’s a little too late now, but I was pondering this assignment and it accured to me: You know what, I bet nobody guessed this one, so here it is. NESSY!!! The loch ness monster!!!!!! OOOHHHH!! I PONE!!! lol. jk. But seriously, MONSTER is in his/her title!! I just had to tell you. My share time is over now. Oh and whether he/she is minor or not depends on what you believe (if he/she is violent or not) If you’re thinking the water horse definately minor, if you thinking MONSTER maybe he/she belongs on a bigger scale. That’s what I love about legends! It’s all based around who is telling the story! (meaning the story is scary or not, not that the person telling the story is Nessy, KATE!) lol
September 8th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Well darn. I just read comments above and found Ol’ Nessy. I guessI don’t pone. :’( I suppose I will go to my room now…and cry. :’( see you guys at school… (jk I’m gonna read my book! YAY SPIES!!!!!!!)
September 8th, 2009 at 8:45 pm

September 8th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Oh well. nvm th eabove one! …Or this one for that matter.
