Advanced Senior Riddles

In class on Friday, we discussed that Anglo-Saxons used riddles as a form of entertainment. We had a powerpoint challenging us to solve some “regular” and some Anglo-Saxon riddles (some of us were more successful at them than others!). Your homework was to blog a riddle. Here were the directions:

1. Think of either a concrete object (tree, shoe, rock) or an abstract idea (love, happiness).

2. Think of the defining characteristics of that thing and how you would describe them to someone else. Remember that you need to hint at those defining characteristics without naming them!

3. In the riddle, you must use alliteration AT LEAST ONCE (but more is preferable).

4. Use kennings to name the aspects of the object without giving it away.

5. The riddle must be at least four lines in length (it does not HAVE to rhyme, but it can).

6. Post the blog, but not the answer!

7. Extra riddles = extra credit (up to two extra riddles allowed).

Advanced Seniors Weekend Writing Assignment

In class, I told you this site would contain your homework assignment for the weekend. So here it is:

1. On the first page of your informal journal (remember, it has to be a composition notebook), take some time to think about your goals for this school year. (It is a moderately important one.) Also consider your goals for about five years from now. Consider these questions in your writing. When I say consider, I mean just think about them. You do not have to answer them all in any particular order. Just let your thoughts ramble.

-How do you feel about finally being a senior? Has it been a long   wait for you or have you not thought about it?

-What things do you want to accomplish this year (academically, in extracurriculars, socially, etc)? What goals do you have for yourself? Are they pretty logical and able to be accomplished or will they take a lot of work?

-What kind of “legacy” do you want to leave behind this year? How do you want your class to be remembered?

-What will you do after this year? What things do you need to do or learn in order to be ready for this step?

-Have you thought even further than next year? Do you have any longer goals for yourself?

-Consider yourself at the END of this year. What message or thoughts do you want to be able to look back on? What do you want to tell yourself on the last day of your Rockridge career?
