Intervention Plan
HOW TO SUCCEED with MS. D
Ms. D’s Philosophy on Grades: Grades are earned, not given. If you learn the concepts I teach, you earn “good grades”, which shows everyone else that you learned the concepts. If you don’t learn the concepts, I haven’t done my job. If your grades are “not good”, they show that you haven’t learned the concepts AND that I haven’t done my job. This means, I will do everything in my power to ensure that you earn no lower than a C in this class. My grading policies are designed to ensure that you learn the concepts I set out to teach this year.
PART ONE: Grading Policies
Ms. D’s Major Three*:
- Check grades: assignments assigned and to be checked at the beginning of the class period for completion. They will NOT be collected and are generally worth fewer points (5-10). Full points will be given if done. None will be given if not done & will lose Part/Resp Points.
- Homework grades: assignments to be collected for more formal assessment. These assignments cover more exact skills to be mastered. Students will earn an A if the student exceeds expectations, a B if the student meets expectations, or a Not Yet (NY) if the student has not met expectations. A NY will require either a redo on the assignment or a new assignment on the skill. If a NY is given, the assignment will be marked as ‘Incomplete’ in the gradebook until resubmitted. Part/Resp. Points will be lost.
- Long-Term: assignments that have been worked on for a considerable amount of time (at least a week) and have usually been worked on in steps. These are worth the greatest amount of points, should NEVER be turned in late, and will result in points taken off odf assignment if they are (at least 10%). Responsibility Rewards MAY be used on these assignments.
Ms. D’s Plus One:
- Participation/Responsibility: an easy 100 points up for grabs each semester. These points are all yours to start each semester and may fluctuate up and down throughout the course of the school year due to your PARTICIPATION in class and the RESPONSIBILITY you show in being prepared.
WAYS TO LOSE POINTS:
· Tardies
· Sleeping
· Late Major Three assignments
· Non-cooperation with your study buddies
· Unexcused absences
· Excessive swinging door requests
WAYS TO REGAIN POINTS:
· Class discussion/ reading aloud
· Correcting established patterns of behavior
· Study buddy cooperation
· Facebook posts
· Extra iRead Bell Ringers
· Exhibiting Character Counts! characteristics
· Employment opportunities
NOTE: Occasional Part/Resp checks will be held. If at least three-fourths of the class has at least 93 points, class will receive a reward (my discretion).
*Quizzes and Tests are another “category” of grades not mentioned here as they do not have any “special” considerations corresponded with them. However, if a quiz or test grade is below a C, a retake will be mandatory.
PART TWO: Intervention Policy
I realize that occasionally “things” happen, and schoolwork suffers because of it. These things may be out of your control and mine, but even if that is the case, with help, your grades do not have to go down. Or maybe you just don’t “get it”; again, with help, you can. OR maybe there have been some really good shows on TV lately. WHATEVER the cause, when your grade dips, it is not just your concern—it involves you, me, and your parents/guardians. For that reason, this intervention plan will be put in place this year.
Purpose: When a “red flag” (cause of concern) is raised, this intervention plan is designed to address the cause and rectify it, involving whoever necessary.

ELO = Extra Learning Opportunity. These will be available every Tuesday/Thursday from 7:30-8:00 or from 3:15-3:45. The ELO will be assigned for the closest Tuesday or Thursday from date ELO given. The time will be chosen by the student. The ELO slip must be taken home and signed by a parent/guardian and brought with student to assigned date/time. The student will know what to bring, and the time will be spent addressing areas of concern. If a student misses an assigned ELO, parental contact will be made and another will be assigned. If the second is missed, discipline action will be taken.
